The Instrumental Women Project "Some of the best jazz musicians in the business, happen to be women"

The purpose of The Instrumental Women Project (IWP) can be understood by pondering two questions:Question 1: Can you name five (5) male jazz musicians?(Living or deceased, any ethnicity)Question 2:Now, can you name three (3) female musicians?(Not including vocalists)As we've posed these questions to thousands of people over the years, including avid jazz fans, only a small number are able to answer the second question - thus, the reason for The Instrumental Women Project.____________________________________________________________________________What began as a "Women In Jazz" concert in June 1998 to support HIV/AIDS programs for women and children in Los Angeles, evolved into Southern's California's annual premier "Lady Jazz Concert Series."In May 2000, the inaugural "Instrumental Women" concert played to a sold-out theatre at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood. This all-female showcase of all-female musicians was included on the L.A. Times year-end list of "Best Live Jazz Performances." Thereafter known as the "Lady Jazz Concert Series," IWP's flagship annual event was produced at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood from 2001-2008. This event garnered the prestigious L.A. Times "Best Bets" distinction as the top recommended jazz venue for the respective week five times during the eight year run at the Ford.Since 2009, IWP has focused on providing live performances for nonprofit fundraisers and community events, including events at the Rose Bowl, Santa Anita Race Track, NBCs Travel and Tourism Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center, annual events for the National Commission on the Status of Women (2009 - LA County and Pasadena Chapters, 2010), U.S Census Event for City of Pasadena and more. 2011 marks IWP's first full season of jazz theatre productions in collaboration with Sierra Madre Playhouse featuring a coed line-up of artists.We're very excited about plans for the 2012 season and hope that you will join us to enjoy some performances that are truly incredible and unforgettable.
